Norton Commando 961 SP – first impressions.

The bike was delivered over a month ago and I have managed a few miles. First impressions, is that it is a beautifully manufactured bike and receives admiring glances wherever it goes.

Positives: Fantastic build quality, dripping with quality parts. It is pure pleasure just to look at the thing.

Negatives: I don’t like the lack of a gear indicator or fuel gauge. Thus finding Neutral can be a pain.

Riding: I have only done around 100 miles in the last month mainly due to abysmal road conditions and my skill levels. Common sense should have dictated me buying a smaller bike to practice on, especially since I have not ridden a bike in over 20 years, luckily the roads are reasonably quiet.

Therefore, as a consequence I would assume my first impressions are not like others riding the Norton, I would assume. For me it was remembering where all the controls are and the fact that this bike doesn’t have a slipper clutch or quick shift. I even hard to remember that down is for 1st gear and up for the others, when going up the box.

The real downside, are my skill levels. I seriously, need to get some miles under my belt and reaffirm a few riding techniques.
