Civil War Exhibition

Newark’s Civil War Centre

On Tuesday we visited the centre and then walked round part of Newark savouring it’s huge history.

Located in the heart of Newark-on-Trent, the National Civil War Centre is the UK’s first museum dedicated to exploring the British Civil Wars of the 17th century. Housed within the historic Old Magnus Building, the centre brings to life one of the most significant and turbulent periods in British history through interactive galleries, authentic artefacts, and engaging exhibitions.

Newark played a pivotal role during the Civil Wars, enduring three sieges between 1643 and 1646 and serving as a major Royalist stronghold. The museum uses Newark’s unique story to explain the wider conflict between King Charles I and Parliament, examining how war, politics, religion, and social change shaped the nation we know today.

Visitors can explore a wide range of displays, from weapons, armour, and personal possessions to multimedia presentations and hands-on exhibits that reveal what life was like for soldiers and civilians alike. The centre also hosts temporary exhibitions, educational programmes, family activities, lectures, and special events throughout the year.

As well as telling a national story, the National Civil War Centre celebrates Newark’s rich local heritage. It serves as a gateway to discovering the town’s Civil War landmarks, including Newark Castle and the National Civil War Trail, helping visitors understand why Newark remains one of the most important Civil War locations in England.

Today, the National Civil War Centre is widely recognised as one of Newark’s leading visitor attractions, offering an informative and immersive experience for history enthusiasts, families, students, and anyone interested in the dramatic events that helped shape modern Britain.
