2. Exterior: Iconic design that effortlessly combines past and present
- Eye-catching design delivers a distinctive sporty stance and sense of anticipation for a dynamic driving experience
- Wider track, larger bumper and eye-catching LED headlamp treatment inspired by legendary City Turbo II
- Unique aerodynamic elements provide exceptional stability, dynamic precision and improved efficiency
For the exterior design of the Super-N, Honda engineers strived to create a one-of-a-kind vehicle that features truly captivating styling that draws inspiration from the legendary Turbo City II, originally released back in 1983.
Creating a vehicle that generates the Japanese feeling of ‘yukai’ (pleasing) when you see it, ‘meikai’ (intuitive) when you interact with it, and the anticipation of ‘tsukai’ (thrilling) before you get behind the wheel, meaning that the Super-N promises Honda driving fun in a compact EV package.
Based on the N-ONE e: kei car available in Japan, the Super-N features a number of bespoke design cues that are also inspired by the City Turbo II and are aimed at lifting the driver’s mood regardless of the road ahead or traffic conditions. Typified by its distinctive wide stance, larger bumpers and eye-catching aero ducts, the Super-N delivers a playfully sporty stance that creates anticipation for a dynamic driving performance.
Combining practical features that support excellent driving performance, with functional beauty that hints at the driving experience this vehicle can offer, the Super-N embodies Honda’s expertise in high performance engineering. Measuring 1,573mm in width, it is 100mm wider than the standard N-ONE e: with the increased track giving the Super-N enhanced handling characteristics and a similarly sporty stance to the City Turbo II.
At the front, the Super-N’s distinctive upright nose clearly highlights the model’s high-performance character. The wider front bumper and muscular flared wheel arches frame a sleek gloss black grille that contains a discreetly concealed charging port and is framed by characterful circular LED headlamps that pay homage to the Turbo City II. Visual tributes to the earlier car can also be seen in the extra inlet vents in the grille and lower bumper that feed the Super-N’s enhanced cooling system.
This also extends to the rear, where the wider bumper features further vents that help control the flow of air, while there is also a centrally mounted, Formula One-inspired fog light, alongside a tailgate that features a gloss black panel between the taillights with full width Honda lettering. As a final flourish, Honda’s designers have integrated a neat tailgate spoiler that helps visually lengthen the roof as well as smooth airflow over the rear of the car.
Measuring 3,599mm in length, the Super-N is 185mm longer than the N-ONE e:, the larger bumpers helping create a lower visual stance for a more dynamic aesthetic. This is further highlighted by the boldly flared front and rear wheel arches that both feature neatly integrated air vents, plus wider sill extensions and unique 15-inch alloy wheels with a special eight-spoke design and two-tone finish.
Optimised Aerodynamic Design
The aerodynamic additions to the Super-N provide both a more dynamic look and enhanced performance, with each element carefully engineered to deliver increased efficiency and stability for an even more exciting driving experience.
At the front, the unique bumper design features an air curtain that feeds air around the wheel and through a duct at the back of the wheel arch. This works with a similar set-up in the rear wheel arches to channel airflow along the side of the car, reducing aerodynamic separation, resistance and lift.
The Super-N also features a chin spoiler beneath the front bumper that feeds air under the car to a rear undertray that suppresses turbulence and helps eliminate aerodynamic lift for greater stability at high speeds. The rear bumper also features carefully designed outlet vents that reduce the ‘parachute effect’ of aerodynamic drag by exhausting otherwise trapped air.
Sustainability Built-in
As part of Honda initiatives toward the realisation of a society with “zero environmental impact” and the achievement of carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activity by 2050, the Super-N features a front grille and rear taillights constructed from recycled materials recovered from end-of-life Honda vehicles. For the front grille, Honda responsibly collected, cleaned, and smashed the discarded bumpers and reimagined them to become the “face of the car”.
Customisation Options
Super-N Customers can choose from five exterior colours, including a signature Boost Violet Pearl that is inspired by the electrical intensity of a bolt of lightning. Other colours include Platinum White Pearl, Crystal Black Pearl, Seabed Blue Pearl and Mono Grey.
In addition, Boost Violet Pearl, Platinum White Pearl, Seabed Blue Pearl and Mono Grey can be specified in a two-tone specification that includes a contrasting gloss black finish for the roof panel and rear spoiler.
3. Interior Design: Human centred approach that thrills on every journey
- Exceptional packaging creates B-segment space and comfort in an incredibly compact A-segment footprint
- Unique Super-N elements include more supportive front seats, eye-catching blue trim accents and ambient lighting that changes with Driver Modes
- The use of high-quality recycled materials throughout Super-N’s interior design
Inside, the Super-N follows Honda’s human-centred approach that delivers exceptional comfort, visibility and spaciousness for such a compact vehicle, as well as enhanced safety and greater driver engagement. Honda engineers focused on these key aspects to provide a more exhilarating in-car experience on all journeys – from long drives to daily commutes.
In terms of design, the upper part of the instrument panel is designed to convey a sense of thinness, creating a spacious feel for the cabin. This low scuttle allows the driver to easily identify the top edges of the clamshell bonnet, which has been carefully contoured to allow the driver to confidently place the Super-N on the road. In addition, the deep windscreen and carefully placed A-Pillars help give a panoramic view ahead for the driver and front seat passenger.
Created to deliver a driver-focused feeling of control, it features a retro-themed, cowled, three meter 7.0-inch digital instrument panel that is inspired by the City Turbo II’s iconic digital cluster and provides vital driving information at a glance.
In addition, sitting below the centrally mounted 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen is a neatly arranged centre console that puts the gear selector, drive mode switch and climate control functions within easy reach. There’s also a handy storage tray ahead of the front seat passenger, which is ideal for storing loose items, such as a wallet or a smartphone in a protective case. While, throughout the interior, high quality materials and a minimalist design aesthetic lets occupants focus on the excitement of the journey ahead.
For the driver and front passenger, Super-N features enhanced seats that have been carefully designed for greater support and comfort. Both the seat base and backrest have thicker side bolsters with extra support webbing and firmer cushioning.
For the driver, these changes deliver improved support during sportier driving on winding roads, giving them greater control and precision with the steering and pedals when tackling corners. Moreover, the use of a thinner, floor-mounted battery pack means a reduced hip point, resulting in a lower, more sporty seating position.
The Super-N features an exclusive interior finish with distinctive blue highlights that pay homage to the original City Turbo II, including the front seats, which feature a playful asymmetric design of blue material. The dashboard highlight is an eye-catching full-width blue pinstripe, while the two-spoke, leather-trimmed multi-function steering wheel gets stitching in the same colour. In addition, ambient lighting bathes the dashboard in a cool blue light at night, changing to a rich purple when BOOST Mode is selected.
As with the exterior, sustainability plays a big part in the design of the cabin. Plant-derived bio-resin is used for the beige decorative upper part of the instrument panel, while materials recycled from used PET bottles and other sources are utilised for insulators and floor carpet.
Sharing the Fun
The Super-N inherits a number of key features from the N-ONE e:, including a roomy cabin and excellent usability, plus the mounting of a thin battery under the floor that has allowed engineers to create enough space to comfortably seat four adults. The generous wheelbase allows passenger space comparable with that of cars in the segment above, with step-through access between the front seats and a large glass area contributing to a light and airy environment.
Featuring the same versatile rear seating arrangement as the N-ONE e:, this provides greater flexibility to accommodate a wide range of bulky items, using a similar mechanism to the renowned Honda ‘Magic Seats’ configuration, where the rear seats can be folded in two ways. In the dive-down layout they can be stored away to create a flat floor that extends from the luggage area to the back of the front seats, while the tip-up function allows the rear seat cushions to be lifted-up to accommodate taller items.
The boot incorporates a high level of versatility in either set-up, with a maximum capacity of 162 litres (VDA method) with the rear seats up, while in the dive-down configuration the available space is increased to 967 litres (to the roof, VDA method). Moreover, the low boot lip and large aperture allow for easy loading of bulky items.
4. EV Performance: Big fun in a small package
- Powerful and compact e-Axle motor offers effortless everyday performance for Honda’s trademark ‘joy of driving’
- BOOST Mode increases power for even greater driving excitement alongside simulated seven-speed transmission and thrilling simulated engine sound
- 128-mile ‘combined’ range (WLTP) with the ability to recharge the battery to 80% in as little as 30 minutes
Built on the lightest platform of the N Series ‘Kei’ car range, the Super-N weighs just 1,097kg and has been built with the ‘joy of driving’ at the forefront of the engineer’s minds. Offering a thrilling escape from the daily routine with the combination of a powerful and compact electric motor alongside a series of innovative driver modes.
The vehicle uses a specially designed e-Axle that combines the motor, reduction gear, electrical compressor and inverter in one compact package – generating 47kW that drives the front wheels. Connected to a thin and lightweight 29.6kW lithium-ion battery that, despite its compact size, provides a ‘combined’ range of 128 miles (WLTP). In urban driving environments, where the compact and nimble Super-N is likely to spend much of its time, the battery delivers a ‘city’ range of 199 miles (WLTP).
In City Mode, Super-N also features a Single Pedal Control System to improve driving efficiency in urban environments that, when activated, enables the driver to seamlessly accelerate, slow and stop the car using only the accelerator pedal.
Introduced to enhance the fun and comfort of driving in urban environments, the linear deceleration control that this technology offers gives an agile response, resulting in a more engaging drive. By decreasing the need to use both accelerator and brake pedals, it helps the driver feel more comfortable in congested city traffic.
The car’s highly responsive acceleration can also be adjusted to suit personal preferences through switchable modes. A steering wheel paddle-activated deceleration mode selector can configure the single-pedal braking characteristics to adjust the strength of deceleration. Both set-ups provide enhanced vehicle stability, particularly during deceleration, giving the driver more control and smoother progress through corners, descending hills or in snowy conditions.
BOOST Mode
The Super-N features the all-new BOOST Mode that further enhances the ‘joy of driving’ by delivering increased performance and an extra layer of immersive driver enjoyment. This unique setting not only releases more power for the electric motor, it re-creates the sound and feel of a traditional high performance internal combustion-engined vehicle with quick automatic gear changes – helping to maximise driver exhilaration and feedback.
Activated by the BOOST button on the steering wheel, this mode instantly lifts the power of the e-Axle motor from 47kW to 70kW, reducing the 0-62mph time from 14.5 seconds to just 10 seconds. To handle the extra heat generated by the increase in power, the Super-N features enhanced cooling for the battery. With a larger radiator fed by vents in the front grille and below the bumper, the temperature of the floor-mounted 29.6kWh pack can be maintained for optimum performance.
In addition, the Super-N uses technology influenced by the innovative Honda S+ Shift, first seen on the new Prelude, to deliver simulated gear changes that create an even stronger connection between car and driver. Although there is no traditional multi-ratio gearbox, the driver has access to a simulated seven-speed transmission that can be used in automatic mode or manually by using the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
By monitoring parameters such as throttle pedal angle, brake pressure, vehicle speed, road gradient and battery state of charge, the Super-N changes the traction motor’s power delivery to carefully recreate the throttle response, torque characteristics and the ‘kick’ felt during gear changes.
This not only results in a more engaging driving experience, it allows the driver even greater control as they can ‘hold’ gears for increased engine braking when approaching a corner, and instance response and acceleration when exiting. In BOOST Mode, the Super-N’s virtual rev-limit is also raised by 30% compared to Sport, creating an even more thrilling experience.
Working alongside the latest generation of Active Sound Control (ASC), this uses the car’s audio speakers to deliver a sophisticated engine sound that is precisely matched to the revs and road speed for a more natural feel when driving enthusiastically. Inspired by some of Honda’s most iconic four-cylinder engines, it delivers a powerful and natural sound that adds to the excitement of spirited driving.
Furthermore, when BOOST Mode is engaged, the Super-N’s digital instrument cluster graphics are changed to feature a distinctive purple colour theme, while the three-dial layout features a large rev counter complete with gear position. Precisely calibrated to the throttle position and motor output, it adds an extra layer of driver involvement. On each side of the rev counter are a battery temperature gauge and a power meter, which provides a real time read out of the motor output and regeneration figures.
Driving Modes
In addition to BOOST Mode, the Super-N features a separate drive mode selector, which drivers can use to seamlessly switch between four options: ECON, City, Normal and Sport. Each one can be accessed using the rocker switch conveniently located next to the gear selector on the centre console.
Designed for ultimate efficiency, Econ mode has been tuned to maximise battery range for relaxing long-distance driving. Offering a softer throttle response and regenerative braking effect, it encourages smooth progress and energy conservation at higher sustained speeds – such as when travelling on motorways.
In City mode, the powertrain is primed to deliver an effortless driving experience, even in congested urban traffic. A more responsive throttle allows drivers to safely take advantage of any gaps in the traffic, while the regenerative braking system is set to its most powerful for relaxing one-pedal operation. This allows you to accelerate, brake and even stop using only the accelerator pedal.
Normal mode offers a balanced driving experience for everyday use. With a carefully calibrated throttle response for quick and effortless performance, it ensures the Super-N feels as at home on the open road as it does in the city, providing a light and nimble driving experience. In this mode the Super-N is tuned to offer smooth response that feels natural and relaxing in a wide range of driving situations.
The more engaging Sport mode sharpens the throttle and adds an invigorating engine note through Active Sound Control. Drivers can also access the seven-speed Simulated Gear Shift using the steering-wheel mounted paddles, while the centre dial of the three-gauge digital instrument cluster changes to include a blue-highlighted rev counter.
Quick charging with an advanced high-performance battery
In addition to achieving the WLTP ‘combined’ range of 128 miles, which offers customer reassurance in everyday use patterns, the Super-N’s battery can be charged to 80% in approximately 30 minutes using a 50kW fast charger.
For complete charging flexibility, the 29.6kWh Lithium-ion battery can also be charged using either a CCS2 DC rapid charger or Type 2 AC connection. The latter charges the car to full in 4.5 hours, via a 7.4 kW supply.
Designed with a focus on simplicity and usability, the charging port is integrated in the front grille. Access is gained from the front of the car or from each side, and opening the charging door requires a simple push. Furthermore, LED lighting illuminates it for the driver and highlights the battery charge status.
Displays on the infotainment screen inside the car present the current level of battery charge, while a drivetrain graphic charts the current power flow in addition to regeneration and recharging status. All battery information and charging data can also be accessed via MyHonda+, where users can start and stop charging remotely, or set weekly schedules and send them to the car. This functionality is especially useful for pre-conditioning the Super-N’s cabin before ending the charge session and driving away, warming the interior and defrosting the windows during the winter months and cooling it during the summer.
The MyHonda+ app also allows users to see where their car is on a map, sound the horn as an extra alert should it be required, plus create a Geo Fence that will send a notification via MyHonda+ if the car strays outside of the set boundary. Setting up a Digital Key is also possible via the app to offer remote locking, unlocking and starting of the vehicle using a smartphone and Bluetooth.
Located at the centre of the vehicle is a water cooled and heated battery pack. To boost efficiency, Honda engineers developed a thermal management system that heats or cools the battery according to the ambient temperature, to allow the car to maintain optimal range capability in extremes of hot and cold weather. Active cooling also enables more frequent rapid charges.
